Day 4
Goðafoss waterfall, Lake Mývatn, Dimmuborgir Rocks, Hverfjall, Námaskarð, Húsavík Whale Museum

When we leave Akureyri we make for the Goðafoss waterfall, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Known as the ‘Waterfall of the Gods’, these horseshoe-shaped falls are sure to leave you speechless.

We then go to Lake Mývatn, a gorgeous and otherworldly landscape, on our way to the incredible Dimmuborgir rocks. Here we delight in the lava formations which are perched on the undulating landscape like dark fortresses. Nearby is the volcano Hverfjall, where scenes from Game of Thrones was filmed.

Next we venture to the bubbling mud pools of Námaskarð. This geothermal landscape seems to be alive with a relentless energy, with billowing steam erupting from the ground and the distinct aroma of sulphur. We then transfer to the town of Húsavík, on the north coast shores of Skjálfandi bay. This beautiful village is the ideal spot to learn about the flora and fauna of the North Atlantic Ocean, and after checking in at the Kaldbaks-kot guesthouse we receive a guided tour through the Whale Museum.

We leave Höfn after breakfast and venture to the magnificent Jökulsárlón lagoon in the Skaftafell National Park. Breathtaking in beauty, this sapphire lake often has icebergs close enough to touch.

We then drive through the vast, desert-like Myrdalssandur plain. Composed of the deposits from an ancient glacier, this jet-black landscape is quite eerie. It is worth passing through to reach the cliffs of Dyrholaey – the perfect vantage point to spot puffins as they roost on the peninsula. We continue on to the gorgeous Skógarfoss waterfalls and receive a guided tour through the nearby Skogar Folk Museum, which contains hundreds of artefacts from everyday Icelandic life.

Afterwards we go to the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Centre, where we can learn more about the 2010 volcanic eruption that shook the world and caused widespread chaos for airlines. Day 7
Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Gerðuberg, Arnarstapi, Snæfellsjökull Glacier, Stykkishólmur

Setting of early we travel northwest to Snæfellsnes, the diverse and enchanting peninsula jutting into the North Atlantic Ocean. Our first stop is the incredible Gerðuberg a giant lava cliff in Hnappadalur valley composed of dozens of basalt columns. These were formed by the gradual cooling of a single massive lava flow ejected by the Ljósufjöll volcanoes, which also shaped the nearby Eldborg Crater.

We then make our way to the charming fishing village of Arnarstapi, where a monument commemorates the timeless adventure-writer Jules Verne, and where we learn about the local legend of Bárður.

We then travel to the Snæfellsjökull National Park, where we witness the awesome site of the Snæfellsjökull glacier. This glacier covers an active volcano, and appears as if a surging lava flow was frozen in time. This glacier was made famous as the starting point of Jules Verne’s "A Journey to the Centre of the Earth”, and acts as a suitable destination for the first day of our voyage.

We transfer along the north coast to the village of Stykkishólmur, which boasts stunning views of the Westfjords on a clear day, before travelling to Borgarnes where we check in to the Hotel Hafnarfjall.

Day 8
Thingvellir National Park, Geysir, Gullfoss Waterfall, Icelandic Horse Park

We leave Borgarnes early for our Golden Circle excursion. Our first stop is the Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park. This UNESCO world heritage site was where the Althing, an open-air assembly representing the whole of Iceland, was established by the Vikings in 930 and continued to meet until 1798. We receive a detailed history lesson as we explore the Park, before transferring to the hot spring area of Geysir, where geysers erupt from the ground regularly – offering the opportunity for some excellent timed photographs.

Afterwards we see the glorious Gullfoss Waterfall before transferring to the town of Hveragerði where we visit Iceland’s new and innovative horse park, Fakasel. This fun and entertaining park contains the very first Horse Theatre, where we can witness horses taking part in live performances of “The Legends of Sleipnir” on stage. We visit the Pearl, which offers wonderful 360° views of the city. Next stop is the unique Hallgrimskirkja church, built to resemble the basalt lava flows of Iceland's landscape. We then go to the City Hall, which contains an excellent three-dimensional map of the country, where our tour guide will point out all the places we visited on our circumnavigation.
